The pen has the Optima shape and is gold plated with a hand-engraved special guilloche pattern. The central strip is skillfully crafted and decorated with a guilloche design by the hands of master goldsmiths, which features the commemorative dates "1492-1992" and the individual LE number. A transparent coffer sealed with wax contain sand from the Island of San Salvador, and three nuggets of gold, to represent Christopher Columbus' Caravels.
